T/B Tofte is a pushertug, designed for handling the pushbarges Virke I-II. The tug is connected in the notch in the barge ́s stern via the hydraulic Arti-Couple system. This tug/bargesystem is designed for ro- ro shipments of pulpwood, wood- chips and other bulk cargoes, and also suitable for containertrans- ports. The system works at its best when the tug can deliver a loaded barge at a destination and take an empty in return. Shifting from one barge to another is done in a few minutes. Woodchips and pulpwood
are normally handled with wheel- loaders. The combination is very agile thanks to the 2 x 1200 BHP Bergen Diesels in Tofte, twin- screw CPP propulsion and twin Becker rudders. When Tofte is not handling the Virke-barges, it is a preferred choiced for ice-breaking, and can also be used for ship- docking.
